A Study of Periodontal Disease and Risk Factors in Pregnant Women

Abstract
The purposes of this study are to assess the periodontal diseases & treatment needs and to investigate some risk factors associated with the occurrence of periodontal diseases in pregnant women attending MCH centers. A total sample of 200 women attending MCH centers in Alex were included in the study. A specially designed questionnaire was used for collection of data that serve the purposes of the study. The results of periodontal examination using a plane mirror & CPI probe and oral hygiene index [O.H.I] were assessed. The majority of pregnant women [98%] had periodontal diseases in comparison to [64%] among non pregnant women, out of six variables entered in the multiple regression analysis, vomiting during pregnancy was the best one variable predictor of increased mean number of sextants with pockets i.e vomiting during pregnancy was associated with a higher mean number of gingival pockets. There was a big need to periodontal treatment for almost all pregnant in the study sample. Preventive oral hygiene programs should be designed and implemented for maintaining healthy gingiva during pregnancy.
