Abstract
Preharvest application of ethrel is used commercially on apple to improve fruit quality. Anna apple fruits were sprayed with different ethrel concentrations [50, 100 and 150 ppm). The fruits weight, length, TSS, reducing sugars, carotene and anthocyanin were pronounced positively with increasing ethrel concentrations, however, firmness, titratable acidity, non- reducing sugars, starch and chlorophyll were decreased. The high values of fruit diameter and reducing sugars were detected at ethrel concentration of 100 ppm. The grade of canned Anna apple depend mainly on the quality of fresh fruits used for such processing. Foliar spray with ethrel at concentration of 100 ppm was superior for all parameters of quality comparing with other treatments. Direct relationship was observed between ethrel concentrations sprayed on Anna apple, and its detected residual values in fresh and canned fruits. The detected ethrel as phosphorus in control fresh and canned Anna apple were 10 and 5 ppm, respectively and increased by about 10 times by increasing the sprayed ethrel concentrations [until 150 ppm ] in either fresh and canned fruits. To study the physiological effect of ethrel on biological system, different concentrations of ethrel [0, 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 250 ppm] were injected in air sac of fertile eggs. Ethrel affected the embryo activity during Incubation time especially the period from 12th - 18th day of incubation. To study the accumulation of ethrel in injected egg embryo, high concentration of ethrel [1000 ppm] was used. Ethrel was determined [as phosphorus] in different organs of embryo such as meat, brain, liver, gizzard, legs and head bones. Ethrel treatment [1000 ppm] may affect some biological sites in embryo organs, which represent variation in phosphorus distribution in different organs. The cytological effect of three concentrations of ethrel [50, 100 and 150 ppm] comparing with control on chick embryos was studied. Ethrel did not induce chromosome breakages in the chick embryo cells and did not cause any malformation even at concentration of 150 ppm.
