Abstract
A total of 400 clean catch midstream morning urine specimens were collected from asyptomatic pregnant women to answer the question is it proper to carry out the rapid screening tests instead of the gold standered urine culture for the detection of asyptomatic bacteriuria [ASB] in pregnancy?, then trying to allocate the proper timing for the early detection of ASB.This is why the value of two rapid screening methods, volumetrivc chamber count of leukocytes and microscopic examination of Gram stained of uncentrifuged urine , were compared with a semiquantitative plate culture method. Urine culture was found to be the tool of choice for screening ASB which should be done at the first prenatal visit or best between 12-16 weeks of gestation as the sensitivity and specificity of pyuria were found to be 71.7 and 61.57% respectively while those of Gram staining were 63.21and 90.48% respectively .
