Abstract
In recent years, community participation [CP] has assumed an increasingly important role in developmental activities. CP is a basic principle in primary health care [PHC]. The aim of the present study was to assess CP in urban PHC services in Hodiedah, Republic of Yemen through assessment of the level of knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP] of CP among PHC team members in PHC centers, as well as among members of local health committees [LHCS], also, the level of KAP of CP among the consumers attending PHC centers. Interview questionnaires were designed for the study participants (90 PHC personnel, 600 consumers, and 35 members of LHCS] to assess their KAP of CP in PHC using a suitable KAP questionnaire for each category. A scoring system was developed. The results revealed that, the majority of PHC personnel had fair knowledge [82.2%], and indifferent attitude [80.0%), while 51.1% of them had poor practices regarding CP in PHC services. Moreover, 45.7% of LHCS members had good knowledge, while the majority of them had positive attitude and partial practices [71.4%] regarding CP in PHC services. The majority of consumers had fair knowledge [73.3%], indifferent attitude (77.0%) and partial practices [68.8%] concerning CP in PHC services. CP of PHC personnel and LHCS members exists in motivating the community members towards the optimum use of PHC services. Participation of community members exists in the form of utilization of PHC services.
