Abstract
Triage is an important and integral part of emergency care. The study aims to describe and evaluate the triage decision making process used by emergency care nurses in the Emergency Hospital of Mansoura University. The structural observational design was used to observe 234 episodes of triage carried out by 40 nurses. In the absence of standardized triage scale, nurses were asked to classify patients into three categories: urgent, acute and non acute. Nurses were lacking education in triage. Intrarater agreement for a triage decision was tested using 12 randomly selected scenarios. This was proved to be moderate. Development and application of standardized approaches to triage practices are recommended.
