Abstract
Kuwait has undergone an acute urbanization through the last 30 years. this contributed to improvements in the health care system and subsequent increase in the life expectancy leading to emergence of chronic diseases such as osteoporosis. Objectives: to assess the level of awareness of osteoporosis (OP) among Kuwaiti female teachers. Methodology: The study is a cross sectional sample survey. The target population comprises Kuwaiti female teachers. A sample of 338 teachers was selected based on a stratified two-staged cluster sampling. Results: Generally, teachers from Hawali governorate, older teachers, and teachers, mathematics and science teachers, high school teachers, and those living in villas had better OP awareness as compared to the rest of the studied sample. However, certain important aspects of OP are not recognized by a large number of teachers, such as warning signs and preventive measures. Conclusion: attention needs to be directed to increase awareness of OP in Kuwait, especially regarding preventive measures, warning signs, and screening tests for OP. Women should be aware that OP is not curable but is definitely preventable, and if diagnosed early, could be treated so as to decrease bone loss.
