Abstract
This work was conducted to study the presence and abundance of vectors in schools of East District of Alexandria and the awareness of the schools' authorities towards this problem. Also, to compare between governmental, experimental and private schools, concerning these aspects. A sample of 61 governmental, experimental and private schools of primary, preparatory and secondary grades was selected for this study. Houseflies, mosquitoes, cockroaches and rodents were surveyed in addition to the harbors and the expected breeding places of these vectors inside and around the schools. Moreover, head lice were surveyed in a sub-sample of the pupils of the above mentioned schools. The results showed that, all types of vectors were found in most of the schools under investigation [46 schools]. Presence and density of vectors and presence of harbors & expected breeding places were more common in governmental schools compared with the private schools. Meanwhile, the situation in primary schools was worse than that in preparatory and secondary schools. The results, also showed a strong positive correlation between the presence of harbors & expected breeding places and the existence of vectors [r = 0.65] or its abundance [r = 0.69]. Private schools' authorities were more concerned towards the problem of vectors infestation than the governmental schools' authorities. Nevertheless, the rate of infestation of head lice in the primary school pupils in East District of Alexandria was 51.5% and this was higher among girls than among boys. Governmental schools significantly ranked at the top of the schools of head pediculosis [76%], followed by the experimental schools [40%] then the private schools [18.3%}. Conclusively, the situation in governmental schools was worse than that in private ones moreover; it was worse in primary schools than in preparatory & secondary ones regarding the presence of vectors and its abundance.
