Abstract
Respiratory Syncytial virus [RSV is one of the most contagious virus transmitted through several ways. It can cause fatal respiratory complications among infants and early childhood. Early and rapid diagnosis of its infection is mandatory to physicians for better management of its illness. This study aimed at evaluating immunofluorescence [IF] as a rapid diagnostic technique for RSV and comparing it with Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay [ELISA] which also considered as a rapid diagnostic tool. Nasopharyngeal aspirates were obtained from 150 cases with acute respiratory infection. Out of them, RSV antigen was detected in 17 cases [11.3 %] by IF, while ELISA detected only 9 cases [6 %]. Interestingly, most of the positive cases were detected among patients with bronchiolitis [83.3%]. In the age group of less than 6 months [19.4%].
